IV Sedation Dentistry

For patients with severe dental anxiety or those undergoing extensive procedures, Redwater Dental Clinic offers IV sedation. Administered intravenously, this sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation, allowing you to undergo dental treatment comfortably with little to no memory of the procedure.

Benefits of IV Sedation

  • Deep relaxation for maximum comfort
  • Ideal for severe dental anxiety or phobia (for milder anxiety, consider oral sedation)
  • Allows multiple procedures in one visit, such as dental implants
  • Fast-acting — works within minutes
  • Sedation level can be adjusted throughout the procedure
  • Most patients have no memory of the treatment

The IV Sedation Process

Here is what to expect:

  1. Pre-treatment assessment and medical history review
  2. IV line placed for sedation medication delivery
  3. Continuous monitoring of vitals throughout the procedure
  4. Dental treatment performed while you are deeply relaxed
  5. Recovery in our office before being driven home

IV sedation is performed by our qualified team with continuous monitoring of your vital signs. You will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for a few hours after the procedure.

Is IV Sedation Safe?

Yes. IV sedation is very safe when administered by a qualified dental professional. Your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are monitored continuously throughout the procedure. Because the sedative is delivered intravenously, the dosage can be adjusted in real time for precise control — making it one of the safest forms of deep sedation available in dentistry.

Will I Be Asleep?

IV sedation is a form of conscious sedation — you are deeply relaxed but not fully asleep. You can still respond to verbal cues and gentle touch. Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure afterward, which is a significant benefit for those with dental anxiety.

How to Prepare & What to Expect After

Avoid eating or drinking for six to eight hours before your appointment. Wear comfortable clothing and arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home. After the procedure, you will be fully alert within about 20 minutes, but may feel groggy for four to six hours. Avoid driving, alcohol, and strenuous activity for 24 hours.
