What Botox® Can Help With

Botox is best known as a cosmetic treatment, but the same medication has been used for years to help patients with jaw tension, teeth grinding, and tension-type headaches. At Redwater Dental Clinic, Dr. Khaleeq Panhwer offers both kinds of treatment in one place — whether you're hoping to wake up without a sore jaw or refresh how you feel when you look in the mirror.

Either way, your first visit is a conversation, not a commitment. Your consultation is free.

Therapeutic Botox — Relief That Goes Beyond a Night Guard

If you've been dealing with any of the following, therapeutic Botox is worth a conversation:

  • Jaw clenching during the day or night. Many patients clench without realizing it, leading to a sore jaw, fatigue, and worn-down teeth.
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism). When grinding is severe enough that a night guard alone isn't enough, relaxing the overworked muscles can give them a chance to recover.
  • Tension-type headaches. If you wake up with a dull, band-like headache or feel one build through the day, it may be tied to muscle tension in your jaw and temples.
  • TMJ pain and jaw soreness. Botox can help calm the muscles that pull on the jaw joint, often paired with our TMJ therapy for a fuller treatment plan.
  • A square or "overbuilt" jawline from chronic clenching. Treating the masseter muscles can soften the jawline cosmetically while also relieving tension — a benefit some patients didn't know they were looking for.

Therapeutic Botox doesn't replace your night guard, your bite work, or stress management — it works alongside them. For patients who feel like they've tried everything for jaw pain, this often becomes the missing piece.

Cosmetic Botox — Subtle, Refreshed, Like You

The cosmetic side is about looking rested, not different. Most patients come in with one specific concern they'd like softened, and we work from there. Common goals include:

  • Softening fine lines around the mouth and lower face
  • A subtle "lip flip" that gently rolls the upper lip outward for a fuller-looking smile
  • Easing a "gummy smile" by relaxing the muscle that lifts the upper lip too high
  • Smoothing chin dimpling (sometimes called "orange peel" texture)
  • Reducing the appearance of a square jawline through masseter treatment

Dr. Panhwer takes a conservative approach. The goal is for you to look like you got a good night's sleep, not like you had something done.

What to Expect at Your Free Consultation

Your first visit is short and pressure-free. Plan for about 20–30 minutes. Here's what we'll cover:

  • A conversation about what's bothering you — jaw pain, headaches, the way you feel about specific facial features, or all of the above
  • A gentle exam of your jaw muscles, bite, and the relevant facial areas
  • An honest opinion on whether Botox is the right tool, the wrong tool, or one of several options worth considering
  • A clear, written estimate — including how many units you'd need and what the cost would be
  • An answer to every question you bring in, in plain language

If Botox isn't the right fit, we'll tell you so. You leave with information, not a sales pitch.

How the Treatment Itself Works

Treatment usually takes 10–20 minutes. The injections themselves use very fine needles and most patients describe them as a quick pinch. If you're nervous, we can apply a topical numbing cream beforehand — just ask.

You can drive yourself home, return to work, or pick up your kids the same day. We'll send you home with simple aftercare instructions: stay upright for a few hours, skip strenuous workouts that day, and avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for the first 24 hours.

When You'll Notice Results

Most patients start to see and feel changes within three to seven days. Cosmetic results usually peak around two weeks. Therapeutic relief from jaw tension and tension-type headaches can take a little longer to feel meaningful — many patients describe it as "I didn't realize how clenched I was until it stopped."

Results last about three to four months on average. Many patients return for maintenance treatments before they wear off completely, while others prefer to come back only when they notice symptoms returning. Either approach is fine.

Is Botox Safe?

Botox has been used in medicine since the 1980s and in cosmetic and dental applications for decades. When provided by a properly trained professional, it has a strong safety record. The most common side effects are mild and temporary — a small bruise or redness at an injection site, occasional mild headache for a day or two, and rare cases of slight asymmetry that resolve as the medication settles in.

You should not have Botox if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have certain neuromuscular conditions, or are allergic to any of its components. We screen carefully for these at your free consultation, and if there's any reason to wait or look at alternatives, we'll tell you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. There's no fee, no deposit, and no obligation to book treatment afterwards. We'd rather have you come in, ask questions, and walk away informed than wonder if Botox might help.

Can a dentist do Botox in Alberta?

Yes. Dentists in Alberta are trained extensively in head, neck, and facial anatomy — the same anatomy involved in Botox injections. Dr. Panhwer has completed advanced training in both therapeutic and cosmetic Botox treatments.

How is the price calculated?

Botox is priced per unit. The number of units you need depends on your goals and the area being treated. We'll give you a clear, written estimate at your free consultation so there are no surprises.

Does insurance cover therapeutic Botox?

Some Alberta dental and extended health plans provide partial coverage when Botox is used for bruxism or TMJ-related pain. Cosmetic treatments are generally not covered. We'll review your benefits with you at your consultation.

Will it look obvious?

Not when it's done well. The aim is a subtle, natural result. We start with conservative dosing — you can always come back to add a little more, but you can't take it away once it's placed.

Can I get Botox if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. We don't provide Botox during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. We're happy to talk through alternatives now and revisit it once you're ready.
