Use Your 2026 Dental Benefits Before Year-End: A Redwater Guide

If you still have dental benefits left for 2026, September is the smart time to use them — not the week of December 23. Most Alberta plans reset on a calendar year. Anything unused by December 31 usually disappears. At Redwater Dental Clinic we see the same scramble every fall: cleanings, fillings, and night guards all trying to fit into the last two weeks of the year.

Why September Beats December in Redwater

December appointments fill fast — work parties, travel, and school breaks all hit at once. Starting in September gives you:

• Time for a cleaning and exam, then any treatment that needs a second visit
• Room to get pre-authorization if your plan wants it
• A quieter schedule before the holiday rush
• A better shot at Saturday mornings (we’re open Sat 8:00 AM–4:00 PM)

If you’re coming from Gibbons, Bon Accord, Legal, Fort Saskatchewan, Morinville, or elsewhere in Sturgeon County / Edmonton’s northeast corridor, booking earlier also means less stress around Highway 28 traffic and weather.

What Usually Resets (and What Doesn’t)

Every plan is different, but most private Alberta dental plans include:

• An annual maximum (often in the low hundreds to around $750 on basic individual plans — your card or booklet has your real number)
• Percentage coverage for preventive care (cleanings, exams, x-rays) that many plans cover at a high rate
• Partial coverage for restorative work (fillings, crowns, root canals) and sometimes night guards or other major benefits

Benefits typically do not roll over. CDCP coverage works differently — eligibility and co-pays are based on the plan rules and your household income, not a private “use it or lose it” maximum. Bring your CDCP member ID and we’ll direct-bill eligible services.

A Simple September Checklist

1. Look at your remaining benefits. App, booklet, or a quick call to your insurer — or ask us to verify.
2. Book a recall exam and cleaning if you’re due. For most healthy adults that’s every six months; some mouths need three to four months (see our cleaning-frequency guide).
3. Ask about treatment that was already recommended. Old filling that’s failing, a crown that was deferred, a night guard for grinding — if it’s clinically needed and covered, doing it before year-end often costs you less out of pocket.
4. Leave buffer time. Crowns, night guards, and deeper gum therapy can need more than one appointment.
5. Don’t book care you don’t need. We’d rather under-treat than over-treat. Unused benefits are not a reason to invent work.

What Preventive Care Costs Here in 2026

• Routine check-up and cleaning for a returning adult (recall exam, about 30 minutes of scaling, polish, and fluoride): about $370.95
• Typical new-patient first visit (complete exam, bitewing x-rays, scaling, polish, fluoride): about $543.85
• Extra scaling when needed: $87.25 per 15-minute unit
• Custom night guard (if grinding is the issue): $763.90

Bonus for regular hygiene patients: take-home whitening (custom trays and professional gel) is included with your cleanings here — keep up those visits and whitening isn’t an extra bill.

Prefer a gentler polish? Ask for Gentle Air Polishing when you book — warm water, air, and a fine powder to lift stains and biofilm. It’s a good fit for sensitive teeth, implants, braces, and dental anxiety. (No separate published fee; ask us when you schedule.)

CDCP, Direct Billing, and No Insurance

Private insurance: We direct-bill most major Alberta and Canadian plans (including Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Pacific Blue Cross, Green Shield, and others). You typically pay only your co-pay or deductible at the visit.

CDCP: We are a CDCP-accepted provider. Eligible services can include cleanings, fillings, extractions, root canals, crowns, dentures, and more, with co-pays tied to household income. Bring your member ID.

No insurance? Our Membership Plan starts at $35/month (Essential) or $55/month (Complete) and includes routine preventive care. It’s for patients without insurance or CDCP — not combinable with either. Details on our membership page.

Care Worth Using Benefits For Before Dec 31

Prioritize clinically needed care, not wish-list dentistry. If you want the full menu, start with our services page and we’ll tell you what actually applies to your mouth:

• Overdue cleaning and exam — cheapest prevention; catches small problems early
• Fillings on teeth already flagged — small fillings beat root canals later
• Gum therapy if bleeding or pockets were noted — early treatment is simpler
• Custom night guard if you wake with jaw pain or worn teeth — $763.90 in 2026; many plans contribute
• A crown that was already recommended — same fee for same-day CEREC or a traditional lab crown: $1,719.20 in 2026
