Quick answer: For most patients, a same-day crown is the better option — one appointment, no temporary, modern ceramic, comparable longevity. Traditional crowns still win in a small set of cases involving highly visible front teeth or specialized materials. We’ll tell you honestly which makes sense for your tooth.

How each one is made

Same-day crown (CEREC technology)

The whole process happens at our clinic in one visit:

  1. We numb the tooth and prepare it the same way as we would for any crown.
  2. We take a 3D digital scan of your tooth and surrounding teeth using a small handheld camera (no putty in your mouth).
  3. Software displays the tooth on a screen; Dr. AJ designs the crown digitally — shape, size, colour, bite contacts.
  4. The design file goes to an in-office milling unit that carves the crown out of a solid block of high-grade ceramic. Milling takes 15–30 minutes.
  5. The crown is sintered (heat-finished) for strength, then bonded to your tooth.
  6. You leave with the permanent crown, ready for normal use.

Traditional crown (lab-fabricated)

The process spans two visits, usually 2–3 weeks apart:

  1. First visit: Numbing, tooth preparation, then either a digital scan or putty impression. We send the impression to an external dental lab and place a temporary crown on your tooth.
  2. Lab fabrication (2–3 weeks): A ceramist or technician at the lab fabricates the crown by hand — layering porcelain over a metal or ceramic core, firing it, glazing it, and matching it to neighbouring teeth.
  3. Second visit: Numbing again, removal of the temporary, fitting of the permanent crown, adjusting bite, and bonding.

Material differences (and why they matter)

Same-day crowns use monolithic ceramic — the crown is one piece of material, milled from a single ceramic block. Modern options include:

  • Lithium disilicate (e.max): Very aesthetic, strong enough for most teeth. Workhorse material for same-day crowns.
  • Zirconia: Stronger than lithium disilicate, often used for back molars under heavy bite forces. Slightly less translucent.

Traditional crowns can use the same ceramics, OR they can use:

  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): A metal core with porcelain layered on top. Strong, but the metal can sometimes show at the gumline over time.
  • Layered porcelain over zirconia: A zirconia core with hand-layered porcelain for aesthetics. Often the choice for high-visibility front teeth where colour-matching needs to be exact.
  • Full cast gold: Rarely used today but unbeatable in terms of longevity for posterior teeth with heavy bite forces. Mostly chosen by patients who specifically prefer gold.

When same-day wins

  • Posterior teeth (premolars, molars). Most back-tooth crowns are perfect candidates for same-day. Aesthetics matter less; durability is excellent.
  • Patients who don't want to come back. Travel, work schedules, dental anxiety — getting it done in one visit is a major win.
  • Replacing an old crown or large filling. Same-day is faster and the result is at least as good as a traditional crown.
  • Patients who hate the temporary stage. No temporary that falls off, no eating restrictions for 2–3 weeks, no second numbing appointment.

When traditional still wins

  • Highly visible front teeth with complex colour-matching. A skilled ceramist hand-layering porcelain can occasionally achieve a more refined aesthetic than monolithic ceramic, particularly when adjacent teeth have unique colour gradients.
  • Multiple front teeth done together (smile makeover). For full-mouth aesthetic cases involving many anterior teeth, a lab ceramist working on all units together can sometimes harmonize them more cohesively.
  • Specific clinical situations. Very rare cases where porcelain-fused-to-metal or full-cast gold is preferred for clinical reasons.

What we'll recommend at your consultation

We'll look at the tooth, the bite, and your specific situation, and tell you honestly which approach is right for your case. For about 80–90% of crowns we do, same-day is the better answer. For the rest, we'll explain why traditional makes sense and walk through both options.

If you've been told you need a crown, come in for a free second opinion — sometimes a tooth that another clinic recommended for a crown can actually be saved with a smaller filling instead. We'd rather under-treat than over-treat.

Cost

Costs vary by case and depend on the tooth, materials, and your insurance. We follow the Alberta Dental Fee Guide and offer direct insurance billing with most major plans. For a real estimate based on your specific tooth and insurance, see our dental cost guide or call 780-942-4691.

Frequently asked questions

Are same-day crowns as strong as traditional crowns?

Yes. Modern ceramic materials used in same-day crowns have been studied for over 30 years and show comparable longevity to traditional lab-fabricated crowns.

Will it match my other teeth?

For most patients, the colour match is excellent — the milling unit uses ceramic blocks pre-shaded to match natural tooth colours, and we fine-tune the colour during the design step. For very complex front-tooth cases, we may recommend traditional crown work for the best result.

Can I eat normally right after?

Yes. Once the crown is bonded and the bite is checked, you can eat virtually anything. We recommend avoiding very sticky candy and chewing ice or hard objects — advice that applies to any crown, same-day or traditional.

Is the appointment uncomfortable?

The tooth is fully numb the whole time. Most of the appointment is waiting while the crown is milled — you can read, watch something on our chairside screens, or just relax.

Is same-day technology available everywhere?

Not yet. Same-day crowns require a significant investment in scanning and milling equipment, so not every clinic offers them. We invested in this technology because the patient experience is meaningfully better for most cases.
